*In 2nd grade at Southridge Elementary School, we expect the students to arrive at school on time ready to learn and stay for the entire day. Please try to refrain from excusing your child early since we do learn until the last bell of the day unless absolutely necessary. We understand that appointments happen and that there are some professionals who don't have appoints after the school day.
*Breakfast- Breakfast is very important because it is difficult to learn on an empty belly. The school does provide breakfast at $1.55 and it begins at 8:00 A.M. if you are in need of this service (If you would like to check out the breakfast and lunch menus they can be found here just scroll to the bottom of the page).
*Reading and Homework- Our main focus is on reading. This is a pivotal year when it comes to reading because the students who are reading well are refining those skills and are now heading to "read to learn", the students who are reading at grade level will be finishing up their "learning to read" skills so that at semester they will also be "reading to learn," and those students who are behind in their reading skills will spend a lot of their time "learning to read." Our goal is that by the end of 2nd grade all students will have the reading skills needed so that they are ready to move into the intermediate grades of their school career. It is very important that your child reads every night and completes all the reading homework assigned. There will be other homework as well in math and spelling, and we expect that all homework is complete, but reading is the most important. We will be having a parent informational meeting at the beginning of the school year to help you learn how to do the reading homework and how to help your child with it. Please join us at the back to school night on August 31st, 2015 from 5-7 for more information.
*Field Trips- We take a few field trips to help the students understand their place, this is called Place Based Education. We ask that parents do not attend these trips with us because our main priority is to make sure all students are safe. If you have any questions about this policy please contact us and we will be more than happy to discuss this in further detail. We have guest speakers from time to time visit our classroom. You are more than welcome to come in to the classroom when the guests are in. We also do some learning outside the classroom as well as inside the classroom all day.
*Volunteers- We love help in the classroom! If you are willing to be a volunteer please contact your child's teacher and we can set up a day and time for you to come in to help out. Activities include, but are not limited to, helping students with work, laminating, making copies, cutting, etc. We look forward to working with your children this year and are excited to learn together!
